All-on-4 Dental Implants Aftercare: How to Achieve a Smooth Recovery

All-on-4 Dental Implants Aftercare- How to Achieve a Smooth Recovery Indianapolis

All-on-4® dental implants provide patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth the opportunity to quickly and affordably restore their smiles. This innovative implant system can support a full arch denture with four strategically placed implants. Knowing ahead of time what the procedure involves both during and afterwards will eliminate any surprises and provide peace of mind.

After your implants are placed, it’s important to follow your post-surgical instructions carefully in order to minimize complications. Patients who follow the dentist’s instructions are more likely to achieve a smooth recovery and long-lasting results.

At Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center in Indianapolis, INDr. Lawrence Falender will meet with you during a private consultation to explain the procedure in dental, answer any questions you have, and discuss what the All-on-4 dental implants aftercare process entails.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

Following proper oral hygiene and keeping your mouth clean is the first and most important step to minimizing your risk of infection. The day after surgery, you will be encouraged to brush your teeth after each meal. Be sure to use gentle techniques so as not to dislodge the surgical site and implant placement. If your restorative device is placed the same day as your implants, use a dental waterpik to prevent food from getting trapped under the denture and around the implants. Dr. Falender may also advise you on a special mouthwash to help aid in your recovery and oral health maintenance.

Minimize Discomfort and Swelling

As with any surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some soreness and swelling for the first few days after surgery. To minimize discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medications. We also recommend placing an ice pack on your outer jaw in 20-minute intervals.

If light bleeding occurs, this is completely normal. Placing gauze over the area and biting down for 30 minutes will slow bleeding and allow a blood clot to form. If bleeding persists past the first few days and is followed by increased pain and fever, it’s important to Contact your Indianapolis Oral Surgeon Dr. Falender, as this may be the beginning signs of infection.

Rest and Hydrate

Resting and keeping your head elevated for the first two to three days will significantly improve your chances for a smooth recovery. We also encourage patients to drink plenty of fluids. Participating in strenuous activity too soon can cause complications, such as infection and dental implant failure. Be sure to follow your post-surgical instructions diligently on activities to avoid. Most patients can return to normal activity three days after surgery.

Follow a Softs Food Diet

In addition to staying hydrated, there are certain foods to avoid and consume that will assist you in your recovery. For the first four to six weeks, you will be encouraged to avoid hot, spicy, and difficult-to-eat foods so as to prevent irritation and dental implant dislodgment, as well as to follow a soft foods diet. Your diet can include:

  • Smoothies
  • Protein shakes
  • Warm soups
  • Baked or mashed potatoes
  • Soft breads
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Cooked cereals
  • Finely chopped meats
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Cottage cheese or macaroni and cheese

Top 10 Reasons Why Dental Implants Are The Perfect Solution to Tooth Loss

Top 10 Reasons Why Dental Implants Are The Perfect Solution to Tooth Loss

If you are someone that has considered dental implants, but are still unsure about the benefits of the treatment, here are ten good reasons why implants are the best available solution to tooth loss…

#1. They Have A Natural Appearance

Dental implants are simply the closest replacement to natural teeth. The crown (or prosthetic tooth) sits in exactly the same position to the gum line as a tooth, and therefore most people are unable to tell the difference between natural teeth and an implant. At Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, Indianapolis, IN we strive to achieve the best possible results in terms of the colour of our implant crowns, to guarantee that the restoration looks 100% natural.

#2. They Behave Like A Normal Tooth

Dental implants function like a natural tooth does allowing you to eat the foods you choose. An implant consists of a small titanium screw which is inserted into a tiny hole in the jaw bone. Because the material is titanium, it naturally fuses with the bone, creating a superbly strong artificial root.

#3. No Damage Is Done to Other Teeth

Dental implants replace a single tooth with a single implant, without any unnecessary damage to other teeth. However, conventional bridges on the other hand, reduce the two healthy teeth adjacent to a gap to support the structure. Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant has no effect on adjacent teeth and can be easily cleaned and flossed, just as a natural tooth can be.

#4. They Can be Cost Effective

The ADA recently stated that ‘over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost-effective and satisfactory option.’ The life expectancy of a bridge is around 10 years, but when you consider that an implant is a permanent solution that will not decay or cause any complications to surrounding teeth, it is clearly more cost effective in the long run.

#5. They Can Last a Lifetime

The longevity of a dental implant is generally very high with an average success rate of 95% after 10 years. In our experience, dental implants provide a highly predictable solution to replace missing teeth. Like natural teeth, if you follow appropriate homecare advice, attend regular dental appointments and maintain a healthy lifestyle, dental implants should last you a lifetime. Unlike other dental procedures, implants are a one-time investment that can be a long-term solution.

#6 You Can Eat Whatever You Like!

Having dentures, or loose, failing or missing teeth, can mean that people are forced to avoid any foods which are crunchy or chewy, which can be very frustrating. Many of our patients talk about how frustrating it is to avoid such foods and miss out on the joys of chewing a juicy steak, or crunching on a crispy apple. However, the strength and stability of implants means all these foods needn’t be avoided.

#7You Can Be Confident About Your Smile

48% of the population in the USA are unhappy with their smile and consequently they miss out on all of the natural benefits smiling brings. Smiling can reduce stress, make you more attractive, calm you down, lift a bad mood- you can even make another person happy with a smile! Restoring your smile or replacing missing teeth, with the most natural solution available, will allow you to confidently smile again.

#8. People Won’t Know You Have Implants

Many of our patients say, that when they meet people for the first time, they are entirely unaware that they have implants. Many others choose not to reveal the fact that they have implants. This invisibility and reliability of implants means that people no longer feel self-conscious about their smile. Unlike dentures, implants do not need to be routinely removed as implants are easily maintained and cleaned like natural teeth, allowing you to get on with your life without any embarrassment or discomfort.

#9. They Will Prevent Aging

The reduction in jaw bone tissue that bridges or dentures cause, can often result in the aging of a patient’s face. Implants however, prevent this bone loss, thus helping to retain the natural shape of the jaw.

#10. They Will Restore Your Self-esteem And Enhance Your Lifestyle

Because implants are invisible, discreet, reliable, stable and aesthetically natural- it goes without saying that they will inevitably enhance your self-confidence, increase self-esteem and improve appearance, resulting in a more enjoyable lifestyle.

Never Have Loose Dentures Again: Permanent Dentures in a Day

Never Have Loose Dentures Again- Permanent Dentures in a Day

“My Dentures Are Loose” is a common complaint that dentists and oral surgeons hear all the dentures in a day time. This is usually from a patient that is wearing an older denture or is on their second or third denture. Understand that when you lose your teeth, the supporting bone ceases to have a function. This is especially true when all the teeth in an arch (upper or lower jaw) are removed.

Most denture wearers relate that their first set of dentures fit perfect and now their second, third… is very loose. The dentist has tried everything, the patient uses denture adhesives (Poligrip, Fixodent…) a few times a day and sore spots are very common. Social gatherings are avoided due to fear of the dentures popping out. Also, taste is decreased as is the enjoyment of eating favorite foods. In addition, dentures use causes the continued deterioration of your jawbones.

So What Can We Do for These Patients?

Permanent Dentures In A Day

We can restore the look, strength and function of natural teeth in one day with Permanent Denture! Unlike dentures, the All-on-4® is fixed in place in your mouth using four Nobel Biocare dental implants. With the All-on-4®, your set of beautiful new teeth is attached to the dental implants. The teeth can only be removed by your dentist.

Once the implants are in place, Dr. Falender attaches anchors to which the new replacement teeth can be secured. Your dentist will make the final replacement teeth on the abutments and adjusts the bite for comfort and a beautiful smile.

To put it quite simply, there is no comparison between the All-on-4® technique and removable dentures. With this incredible technique, the following benefits and advantages are afforded to almost all patients of all ages and stages of tooth loss:

Results of the All-on-4® procedure are immediate and can be enjoyed on the same day. This means instant oral aesthetics (a beautiful and natural smile) and a fully restored bite functionality, which almost always can be used for eating on the evening of the procedure.

The results are fixed and non-removable: The dental prosthetic bridge used in the All-on-4® is affixed to four dental implants in the mouth. So, unlike false teeth, it does not move around and cannot fall out. It also prevents continued bone loss.

The fixed denture is cleaned just like natural teeth – with regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing- so no need for removal after meals or at night time.
No repeated expenses such as messy adhesives, anesthetic gels and other costs associated with wearing removable dentures.

The dental prosthesis is custom fabricated to intimately fit the natural contours of the patient’s mouth and jaw, so it feels like a full set of natural teeth.
There is no compromise of taste, and there is no triggering the gag reflex as removable dentures tend to.
Increased bite strength so patients can enjoy all the foods they love but previously couldn’t with removable dentures and missing teeth.
The All-on-4® teeth replacement solution is long term and can last decades to a lifetime if cared for properly!

All-On-4® Dental Implants

Who should consider All-on-4® Dental Implants? Who is a good candidate?

  • People with several failing or missing teeth.
People who are in need of multiple dental implants.
    People who wear dentures.

Call today for a confidential consultation and get started on the road to a better life!

What Is the All-on-4 Implants Process and Am I A Candidate for All On 4 Dental Implants?

What Is the All-on-4 Implants Process and Am I A Candidate for All On 4 Dental Implants?

If you have suffered total tooth loss, have been told it is imminent, or currently wear ill-fitting removable dentures, the All-on-4 dental implant process is an option that you should look into. In Indianapolis, All-on-4 Implants Procedures offer a faster solution to tooth loss than traditional implant procedures, restoring the look, feel and function of natural teeth in one day. That means that you could walk into our dental office toothless one morning and leave with a full, brilliant new smile that same afternoon. By now you are probably wondering just what the All-on-4 process is and whether you are a candidate for this procedure.

The All-On-4 Dental Implant Process at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center

The All-on-4 Implants technique is a revolutionary approach to implant-based dental restoration in patients who have lost all teeth in one jaw or both. Before this technique was developed, providing a patient with a full arch of replacement teeth meant placing at least six dental implants – and often as many as eight or ten – in the jaw, then waiting months for the implants to bond with the jawbone before replacement teeth could be attached. Additionally, patients often had to undergo preparatory procedures, such as bone grafts or sinus lifts, before implants could be placed, making the process – and the amount of time spent wearing an uncomfortable temporary denture – even longer.

With the All-on-4 dental implants in Indianapolis process, patients have one or two visits with Dr. Falender for the purpose of treatment planning. During those visits, Dr. Falender will gather the information needed for precise surgical planning and prosthetic fabrication. That information gathering process generally includes a physical examination, 3D CT scans, X-rays, photos and impressions, as well as the collection of a complete dental and health history. After these consultation appointments have been completed, patients are scheduled for surgery, during which four specialized immediate-load dental implants will be placed in the jaw and new teeth fitted and adjusted – all in one appointment.

Are You a Candidate for The All-On-4 Ventura Dental Implants Procedure?

Most people who are in fairly good general and oral health are candidates for this procedure. That doesn’t mean you have to be in perfect health, so don’t assume you aren’t a candidate if you have a few health problems. Most patients with underlying medical or dental health issues can have the procedure, with just a few exceptions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension, certain blood disorders or active periodontal disease, among others. Additionally, due to the specialized design of the dental implants used in All-on-Four procedure, patients with some bone loss in the jaw – even those who have been wearing removable dentures for years – can often be helped to a new, secure and natural-looking smile, often without the need for preparatory bone augmentation procedures.

Of course, the only way to know for sure if you’re a candidate for dental restoration through the All-on-4 process is to see your Implant Dentist for a consultation. If you are one of the few patients who cannot be helped with this advanced form of dental implant restoration, chances are that your dentist has other implant-based options available to restore optimal oral health and function and an attractive new smile.

Look Years Younger With Dental Implants Indianapolis

Look Years Younger With Dental Implants Indianapolis

You typically spend the first couple decades of your life wishing you were older, then sometime, years later into adulthood, you start wishing you looked years younger.

Here at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center many patients who have experienced dental implants in Indianapolis have told us that implants have not only improved the way that they carry out everyday tasks such as talking and eating, but it’s also made a huge difference to the way that they look too.

If you’re worried it’s your face that is making you look older, Dr. Lawrence Falender may have just the solution for you. No, we’re not talking about drastic plastic surgery. We’re referring to the age-defying services offered at Indianapolis All On 4 Implant.

At Our Indianapolis, IN dental office, we offer dental implant services to patients who have issues with their teeth, including

  • Loose Teeth,
  • Missing Teeth,
  • Failing Teeth, or
  • Infected teeth.

But what does that have to do with looking younger? Quite a lot, actually!

Prevent Bone Loss With Dental Implants

When a tooth falls out naturally or happens to be removed the jawbone will automatically start to shrink making the face look as if it has been ‘pinched’. Over time this can lead to the development of sagging cheeks and wrinkles. For some this can be a drastic alteration which can leave them feeling less than confident.

Over time, the lack of bone structure will cause your face to collapse, resulting in sagging skin and extra, premature wrinkles. While dentures can certainly help prevent these negative consequences of tooth loss, dental implants are likely your best option.

Dental implants prevent your bone from deteriorating and your remaining teeth from shifting. This is great news if you’re wanting to maintain your smile after losing teeth, no matter your age. Although maintaining a youthful glow is certainly a great perk! Whilst traditional methods to missing teeth such as dentures don’t address this issue, the good news is that well-fitting dental implants can make a real difference to a person’s appearance and can actually appear to make them seem younger. Let’s see how.

What Is A Dental Implant?

With all this talk about dental implants, you’re probably left wondering exactly what these powerful little tools are. They’re tiny rods, similar to screws that we surgically place in your jawbone.

Implants can then be capped with a dental crown to replace a single lost tooth. If you’re missing more or even all of your teeth, we can strategically place dental implants to hold a dental bridge or partial or full dentures in place. With so many different ways to use dental implants, you’d be hard-pressed not to find a solution that can work for you.

Giving the Appearance of a Fuller Mouth

Unlike other forms of teeth replacement dental implants fit snugly into the gap left by your missing teeth. This gives the immediate look of a fuller mouth and can appear to banish the ‘gaunt’ appearance of sagging cheeks.

Stops Unwanted Bone Wastage

The other major factor that’s particular to dental implants is that they can actually halt the bone shrinkage process. When a tooth is lost the bone tissue that once supported the tooth root is no longer stimulated. As a result it starts to shrink away gradually. This bone shrinkage will over time alter the overall shape of the face. Unlike dentures which sit on the gum line a dental implant is secured down in to the jawbone. Over time the bone tissue cleverly fuses and merges with the titanium implant to create a strong and solid platform upon which to support the crown. Therefore not only can dental implants halt the bone shrinking process, but they can also encourage bone re-growth.

Look Great Aesthetically

Finally if you need more proof, dental implants are by far the most natural alternative to missing teeth. In fact if you come to us at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center and are fitted for a dental implant in Indianapolis then we are sure that unless they look very closely, your friends and family won’t be able to tell the difference between an implant and a real tooth. We use a color match process to ensure that your teeth are well -matched for that seem less blend of artificial and natural. This gives you the appearance of a perfectly natural set of teeth that can ultimately make you look younger than your years.

Look Years Younger After A Trip To The Dentist

Wouldn’t you love the ability to look years younger after just one trip to the dentist? Seems too good to be true, right? Well, at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center we can completely restore your smile in just one day, with the help of dental implants.

At our Indianapolis dental office, we offer The AO4+ Smile Solution. This state-of-the-art treatment plan allows us to extract any teeth if necessary, place your dental implants, and send you home with beautiful temporary teeth, all in the same day.

Why temporary teeth? Because it takes a couple weeks for your custom-made dental crowns to be designed but we don’t want you to have to go home with an incomplete smile. Don’t worry, the temporary crowns are comfortable and natural-looking. We’re confident you’ll be thrilled with your results.

Save Time While Saving Your Smile Too : Same Day Teeth

Save Time While Saving Your Smile Too - Same Day Teeth indianapolis

When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, there is no procedure as impactful as the Same Day Teeth procedure. The results are beautiful and life changing, to say the least. Any missing teeth or other imperfections you have in the beginning of the day will not be there by the end. You get a functioning, ideal smile in just one day.

What Is Same Day Teeth?

‘Same Day Teeth’ is a technique for people with missing or failing teeth and usually refers to a new fixed complete set of teeth on dental implants. This is a great option for people who are already wearing dentures or are losing their teeth due to disease and breakdown. The idea being to provide the patient with a new ‘fixed’ set of teeth (either bridgework or a fixed denture) are screwed onto dental implants which have been placed on the very same day. Initially these are a provisional set of teeth that look and feel great and are then replaced with a more permanent set some months later.

The ‘same day’ concept can also be used for a single tooth or a few teeth in some cases, but more commonly relates to a complete jaw or set. It can be done using the ‘All on 4 implants’ technique or with 6-8 or more implants in each jaw depending on the needs of the case and on whether a fixed denture or fixed dental crowns and bridges are desired. All on 4 implants are a quick, safe and cost-effective dental treatment for anyone whose self-confidence and quality of life are affected by missing teeth. All on 4 implants even work in people who have a lack of bone although some bone rebuilding is sometimes necessary.

Criteria For Getting New Teeth In A Day

Patients treated with the technique and therefore included in the retrospective analysis met the following criteria:

  • Jaw Bone profile for the placement of atleast 4 implants of 10mm in length in either healed or immediate extraction sites.
  • Good general health with acceptable oral hygiene.
  • Implants achieved stability at insertion.

So What’s Involved?

Initial Consultation

Your first step in the procedure will be a consultation with your Indianapolis Oral Surgeon Dr. Falender. During this consultation they will examine your mouth and do a CT scan. This scan lets them assess your suitability for implants. They can check your existing jaw bone density to determine precisely where the implants should be inserted. Your oral surgeon should also discuss alternative treatment options with you before you commit to anything.

If you are a suitable candidate and decide to go ahead, the next step will be dental impressions. These are sent to a lab where your new dental bridge is designed to fit and look just like natural teeth. Your Oral Surgeon may also take some x-rays to help with planning your treatment.

Surgery

If you need to have teeth extracted before your implants are inserted, this can usually be done on the same day.

The overdenture is permanently fixed to the implants. Your dentist or oral surgeon will probably offer you a sedative to help you relax during the procedure. Then they will anaesthetise you so you don’t feel any pain. If you would prefer to have a general anaesthetic for your All-on-4 treatment, ask your dentist about this at your initial consultation.

After any remaining teeth are extracted your mouth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any damaged tissue and bacteria.  The dentist drills two or more holes at the front of your jaw to hold the front implants. Two holes at the rear – one on each side – are angled to offer greater support to the rear of the dental bridge.

Once the implants are placed, your mouth is cleaned again and any incisions are stitched up. It’s common for dentists to use dissolvable stitches which disappear after a week or two. Either the same day or the following day you’ll be fitted with your new teeth. Some dentists create a temporary overdenture at this stage which is then replaced a few months later. This is often made from resin – a lighter but less durable material – which puts less pressure on your implants while they heal.

Aftercare

Patients usually experience some bruising, swelling and general discomfort in the days after their surgery. You’ll probably want to take a couple of days off work to recover fully and get used to your new teeth. It will be a while before you can eat apples again.

Your Oral Surgeon will advise you on the type of foods you can and cannot eat in the months after your treatment. For the first few months you’ll probably have to stick to very soft foods so you don’t disturb the process of the implants fusing with your bone. You might also be advised to avoid things like smoking and heavy exercise for a while.

These implants are cleaned just like your normal teeth – by brushing once a day. Your oral surgeon will also show you how to floss with special tools. You might want to invest in a water flosser with special attachments designed to clean around implants.

Benefits of Getting All-on-4 Implants Indianapolis

  • Get Immediate Results : With as few as four dental implants, you can replace your dentures and have a permanent implant-supported bridge in as little as one day. Experience a dramatic improvement in chewing ability, teeth stability and overall comfort right away.
  • Improve Your Appearance : The All-on-4 procedure takes 20 years off of your smile! The procedure helps preserve the jawbone and prevent further deterioration of the facial structure associated with missing teeth and a lack of the root system that supports them. Dental implants decrease wrinkles caused by missing bone and tooth structure, which helps you look younger!
  • Eat What you Want, When You Want, Where You Want : Your overall eating habits will improve with the All-on-4 procedure. You’ll be able to enjoy your favorite foods again, instead of avoiding them in public or at home.
  • Get a Long-Lasting Smile : The All-on-4 dental implant procedure creates a permanent set of teeth with a non-removable implant-supported retained dental bridge. Your dental implants never have to be removed, and your teeth can last a lifetime.
  • Enhance Your Overall Quality of Life : With All-on-4 dental implants, your new teeth will feel and function just like real teeth. You’ll have greater comfort and confidence when smiling, speaking, and eating. Overall you’ll look better, feel better, and have a renewed outlook on life.
  • Eliminate Health Issues Associated with Failing and Missing Teeth : The All-on-4 dental implant procedure helps create a healthier mouth and a healthier body by helping reduce the chance for periodontal disease, a bacterially-induced chronic infection and inflammatory disease. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases. Because dental implants restore your mouth to a more natural state, they may help fend off periodontal disease. With routine brushing and flossing, dental implants help enhance your overall health.
  • Easily Care for Your Teeth : Another All-on-4 implants benefit is ease of care. With daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to your Dental Associates hygienist and dentist, your new teeth will stay clean and healthy.

Teeth In A Day – Reality Or Myth

Teeth In A Day - Reality Or Myth Indianapolis

Dental implants have many benefits. One of the most important is replacing a broken or damaged tooth in the front area that can no longer be restored. In this case, teeth in a day offers a highly aesthetic and efficient solution as it avoids the need to prepare the adjacent teeth in just one sitting. However, the traditional procedure can take up to one year as it implies three different steps:

1. Removal of the existing tooth or root. The extraction socket is left to heal for four to six months before a dental implant is placed. During this period, the body will grow new bone inside the socket.

2. The implant is surgically inserted into the jaw bone. A variable amount of healing time is required for osseointegration (3 to 6 months). Osseointegration is a biologic process where the implant forms an intimate bond to the bone.

3. After the healing time, a dental crown is attached to the implant.

Teeth In A Day: Immediate Placement And Loading

The loss of tooth in the esthetic area is often a traumatic experience for the patient. Patients may suffer real or perceived detrimental effects following the loss of one or more teeth. Dental implant offers the most cost-effective and long-term solution for replacement of missing teeth with high average life expectancy, providing the patient with the best sense of security and well-being. Recently, immediate implant placement after extraction of tooth with early loading has become more common. The advantages of this procedure include

  • Fewer surgical interventions,
  • Reduction in overall treatment time,
  • Reduced soft and hard tissue loss, and
  • Psychological satisfaction to the patient.

Who Is A Candidate For Immediate Tooth Replacement With Implants ?

Immediate placement is not appropriate for all patients and cases and the screening process should be extremely thorough. The ideal candidate is someone who is in good dental and general health. Some factors can also negatively affect tooth implants:

  • Smoking
  • Any conditions that affect the immune system or reduce the body’s ability to heal
  • Some drugs such as bisphosphonates as these drugs increase the risk of bone death after surgery
  • Bruxism or teeth grinding and clenching

Patients who choose this approach must also be committed to good oral hygiene. Furthermore, not overloading the implant crown is another factor that needs to be reinforced with patients when loading an implant immediately after placement.

Patients with enough bone quantity and quality are great candidates for immediate placement and loading because of anticipated implant initial stability assuming that they would be compliant with postoperative instructions.

Steps For Getting Teeth In A Day

There are a number of issues and steps to consider:

1. Consultation And Planning

Dental implant surgery has to be meticulously planned; when you opt for immediate implant placement, careful planning and experience are prerequisites for success.

Your Indianapolis Oral Surgeon Dr. Falender will need to know your complete dental and medical history before carrying out various diagnostic tests, such as dental x-rays and a CT scan.

The data from these tests must be analyzed to assess the quality of the bone that will be surrounding the tooth implant. When an implant is placed into a recent extraction site, many doctors prefer to graft bone in the alveolar socket to create a bony base for the implant.

There should also be enough gum tissue to surround the implant and crown as this will affect aesthetics; the implant crown should look as if it is emerging naturally from the gums. Gum tissue can be grafted from another site in the mouth if necessary.

At this stage, Dr. Falender from Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, Indianapolis will also determine the best position for the implant and will choose the correct size.

2. Removing The Existing Tooth

It is quite critical that your broken tooth is removed very carefully so that the tooth socket is not damaged.

If any bone from the walls of the socket is damaged or lost, it could lead to unsightly gum recession and/or a poor prognosis; in this case, many practitioners would prefer to end the procedure (and continue with the traditional approach) rather than risk a poor result.

3. Implant Placement

Using this technique, the implant fixture is placed in the bone right after the tooth extraction. It is vital to place the implant so that it is stable and non-movable in the bone. This stability is referred to as the primary stability of the implant.

Latest research suggests that the primary stability of the implant in bone is a more important determinant of the success of implant integration, rather than a certain period of healing time.
The tooth socket of an upper front tooth is cone-shaped. To achieve primary stability, the implant has to penetrate the apex of the socket (or the end point) and affix to the bone in this area. Additionally, a bone graft can be placed inside the tooth socket.

It is very important to select the right-sized implant for the situation and make sure that it is placed in exactly the right position.

4. Crown Placement

The crown will be attached to the implant in one of two ways:

  • Directly : The crown and the abutment are one piece and a lag-screw traverses both to secure the one-piece structure to the internal thread on the implant.
  • Indirectly : First, the abutment is attached to the implant and the crown will be cemented to the abutment. In this variation, the abutment can be used to create a change of angulation for the crown to emerge through the gum tissue with a more natural appearance.

Regardless of the variation used, it is critical that the newly attached crown is free from biting forces, which could displace the implant. The crown is usually a temporary crown, made of a composite or acrylic resin, which can easily be modified to ensure that it is both functional and cosmetic.

Once the implant is fully integrated with the bone, the temporary crown can be removed and replaced with a permanent one.

5. Care And Maintenance

Immediate implant placement and loading requires higher patient compliance. There are 3 key factors that patients have to consider:

  • Overloading : It is vital that the implant restoration should not be overloaded as even micro-movement during the first two months of placement can result in non-fusion and failure of the implant to attach to the surrounding bone. Avoid biting on extremely hard pieces of food and contact your doctor if you notice any signs of involuntary teeth grinding and clenching.
  • Oral Hygiene : It is critical to take good care of the area around the implant for the first couple of months after the surgery in order to prevent infection. If maintaining this level of care could be a problem, then you should consider traditional tooth implants that use a two stage technique.
  • Smoking : You may not be suitable for this type of treatment if you are a heavy smoker and have problems quitting smoking and tobacco products.

Benefits And Risks Of Same Day Dental Implants

Benefits

Benefits of immediate tooth replacement with implant restorations include:

  • A highly durable and stable restoration
  • Full aesthetic restoration
  • Minimization of the tooth movement associated with tooth loss
  • Reduction in the bone deterioration associated with tooth loss
  • Confidence
  • Less waiting time

The best news is depending on your specific requirements and case, you could be pleasantly surprised at the cost effectiveness of your immediate dental implant treatment.

In the past, it was challenging to replace a patient’s loss tooth immediately. Patients had to wait for a period of 3 to 6 months and suffer the inconvenience of wearing temporary dentures during their healing period.

Now, thanks to modern state-of-the-art surgical techniques and tooth implant technology, our patients can have permanently fixed tooth or teeth fitted within a few days of the surgery.

It is important that you know when you lose a tooth, it is highly advisable you replace it as soon as possible. This is because since your loss tooth no longer supports the jawbone underneath, over time it could result in jawbone deterioration.

Depending on the cumulative deterioration of your jawbone, this can in the long run undermine the strength and position of your remaining teeth. So, even if you’ve lost a single tooth, to avoid a long term “domino effect” it is best to replace your missing tooth or teeth as soon as possible.

Risks and Drawbacks

Same-day dental implant treatments cannot create a shortcut that will bypass the bone-to-implant integration process. This must still take place and cannot be rushed because the body needs time to produce new bone cells that will firmly hold the implant in place. Patient compliance is vital to ensure the tooth implants do not move during a healing period, which may be anywhere between three and six months. During this time, it is often necessary for patients to stick to a softer diet, avoiding particularly hard or crunchy foods, such as carrots or almonds. This can last 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. Failure to adhere to a softer diet may result in the implants moving, negatively impacting integration and increasing the risk of treatment failure.

Often the restorative dental implants that are attached immediately after surgery are simply temporary, remaining in place until integration is completed, after which they can be replaced with more permanent implant-supported restorations. These immediate restorations are usually fabricated before surgery takes place and may not look as highly aesthetic as the final restorations.

While this treatment isn’t for everybody, the potential emotional benefits for patients receiving same-day dental implants shouldn’t be discounted. However, treatment is often extremely technique-sensitive and extensive skill is needed to ensure success.

Dental Patient Benefits of Image-guided Implant Surgery

Dental-Patient-Benefits-of-Image-guided-Implant-Surgery-Indianapolis

Image guided surgery makes use of the very latest technology to help ensure that your dental implant treatment is a complete success. When you visit Dr. Lawrence Falender at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center for your initial consultation, it’s highly likely that he will want to take some diagnostic images. These will include dental x-rays and if you decide to proceed with implant surgery then you will need what’s called a cone beam CT scan. This is a detailed 3-D image of your mouth showing all of its structures and it is essential for implant planning. Dental implant treatment isn’t simply a matter of inserting a dental implant into the jawbone as the surgery has to be precisely planned and this is where 3-D imaging is so invaluable.

What is Image Guided Surgery?

Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center is one of the first practice in Indianapolis to use imaged guided technology for dental implant surgery. This revolutionary technology provides real-time, turn-by-turn guidance for less invasive surgery and more accurate placement of dental implants. It is the newest and most advanced system used for placement of dental implants.

It is today’s most advanced method of placing dental implants, one that uses a combination of state-of-the-art medical/dental technology and cutting edge surgical techniques to provide Indianapolis, IN dental patients with exceptional implant-based dental restoration results. Here we’ll delve into the details of image guided dental implant procedures, including how they differ from standard implant procedures and their benefits for the average dental patient.

Image guided surgery starts with 3-D Imaging. Visualizing your jaw in three dimensions allows us to identify the relationship between important anatomical structures and nearly eliminates the uncertainty that is often encountered with traditional 2-D imaging. Virtual surgical planning software is then used to create a 3-dimensional digital treatment plan that is reviewed with your dentist and used to show you what you can expect everything will look like from start-to-finish. This allows you to see the images in an understandable way so that you can make educated decisions about your treatment plan.

Benefits of Image-Guided Implant Surgery

Image-Guided Dental Implant Surgery Provides Greater Accuracy

The mouth is full of important structures that your oral surgeon has to be mindful of them when installing a dental implant. You wouldn’t want your dentist to hit a nerve, and you wouldn’t want the titanium post of your dental implant to come in contact with the root of the adjacent tooth. Nor do you want your implanted tooth to be crooked or off-center.

Image-guided surgery allows your oral surgeon to operate with a high degree of accuracy because the 3D images provide a detailed view of each part of your mouth. Furthermore, mapping the surgical process ahead of time, with the images as a guide, reduces the risk of mistakes at the time of surgery. Image-guided surgery provides more accuracy than other forms of implant surgery.

Image-Guided Dental Implant Surgery is Less Invasive

The higher degree of accuracy provided by image-guided surgery is what allows it to be a less invasive procedure than other types of dental implant surgery. Thanks to the detailed images of your mouth and the careful planning of your surgery before the actual operation, your dentist can install your implant with only a small incision, or even with no incisions at all.

When using a freehand technique, dentists have to plan their incisions and other surgical movements as they’re performing the surgery, which could lead to larger or more incisions, especially if the dentist is placing multiple implants. In the image-guided surgery process, all of that planning is done before the surgery with accurate models of your mouth, which allows your dentist the time and resources to determine the least invasive way to install your dental implants. The less invasive the surgery is, the less risk you have of complications.

It’s Easier to Recover from Image-Guided Dental Implant Surgery

The greater degree of accuracy and the lesser degree of invasiveness combine to make image-guided dental implant surgery easier to recover from than other dental implant surgeries.

Because your oral surgeon can ensure accurate placement and smaller incisions, you’ll have less bruising and swelling and less pain than you would if your dentist used a freehand technique. Fewer and smaller incisions also mean less chance of infection after the surgery. Because post-surgical infections can lead to implant failure, reducing your risk of infections increases the likelihood that your implants will be successful.

Your recovery will not only be easier; it will be faster. You’ll be ready to flash your new and improved smile sooner rather than later.

What Is a Surgical Guide and When Is It Used?

Our implant dentist Dr. Falender may well choose to make what is called a surgical guide which is a template that will be made based on the information provided by 3-D imaging technology. The template shows Dr. Falender the precise positions to insert the dental implants during image guided surgery and helps ensure that the whole procedure will proceed as smoothly as possible. This is also an advantage for you, as the surgical procedure will be quicker and less invasive as Dr. Falender will know precisely where to make any incisions, and smaller incisions will be quicker to heal with less risk of infection or any other type of complication.

How You Get the Very Best Dental Treatment in Indianapolis IN

Not every implant dentist offers this type of advanced technology but it is worth seeking out someone who does if you want to receive the best and most comfortable treatment that will give you a higher degree of success. As well as making for a more comfortable procedure, image guided surgery helps to ensure that the final results will look wonderful. By placing the dental implant in precisely the right position, you can be sure of having an implant tooth that will be able to function properly so it will feel just like your natural tooth. It should also look stunning as the final aesthetics would have been taken into account when planning your treatment.

Dental implant surgery is not a quick procedure and it is not the cheapest way to replace a missing tooth but the advantages far outweigh these factors. However, to maximize your chances of successful treatment, it pays to choose an implant dentist with this advanced technology and who has extensive training and experience in placing all sorts of dental implants. In other words, you do need a specialist such as Dr. Lawrence Falender.

So, the bottom line answer to the question “What is image guided dental implant surgery?” is that it is the safest, most accurate method available today to place dental implants, providing patients with top-of-the-line care when it comes to implant-based dental restorations. Given that fact, it just makes sense to choose an Indianapolis specialist Dr. Falender for your procedure who has invested in this state-of-the-art technology, ensuring that you’ll get the optimal results you’re looking for as you invest your time and money into restoring your smile with dental implants.

May is Older Americans Month – A Reason to Smile

May is Older Americans Month - A Reason to Smile

May is Older Americans Month, officially designated as a time to honor the enormous contributions people aged 65 or older have made to our society, communities and country. The original proclamation, issued by President John F. Kennedy on April 18, 1963 read in part:

“This large segment of our population represents a great national resource of skills, wisdom, and experience upon which much of our Nation’s progress has been built and which continues to enrich our daily lives and to provide counsel and leadership.”

In that proclamation, Kennedy designated the month of May as Senior Citizens Month. Proclamations by each president since Kennedy have continued the tradition, with President Jimmy Carter changing its name to Older Americans Month in 1980.

Older Americans Contributions in Indianapolis

Here in Indianapolis, we see a very public display of those contributions through the many older Americans who have held positions in our government. However, during Older Americans Month, it is just as important to acknowledge those millions of quiet, behind-the-scenes contributions of wisdom, knowledge and inspiration are given by older Americans every day, gifts that enrich the fabric of our lives as much as those public contributions.

Who Are They?

Older Americans are the soldiers that left home to serve our country in times of war, as well as those who stayed home to hold our communities together during times of crisis. They are the people who have taught generations of children in our schools, counselled them in churches and community centers and kept them healthy in our hospitals and clinics.

They are the volunteers who donate their time in hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters and food pantries. They are the artists and musicians who have given beauty and joy to our society, the inventors who have produced the technologies that built our exceptional American standard of living and the people that kept the traditions of past alive to be celebrated by current and future generations.

So how can we show our appreciation to these people who have created the foundations of the society we enjoy today? Find out where the areas of need lie among the older Americans in your community. The local senior center or neighborhood church could probably help in that regard.

One issue that we are perhaps more aware of than most, since we’re an oral surgery blog, is the large number of older Americans who have lost teeth and avoid social situations due to their appearance. It is a well-established fact that older Americans that maintain active social lives live longer, healthier lives than those that don’t.

Older Americans Month - Give the Gift of a Smile

With dental implants, Indianapolis seniors who have come to us with a conspicuous gap in their smile that has been holding them back have left with a new lease on life, looking wonderful and feeling ready to rejoin the world. Unfortunately, dental implants are considered a cosmetic procedure and aren’t completely covered by most insurance plans. Since many older Americans with dental issues are on fixed incomes, they simply do without the care they need. So, if you’re aware of an older American who is in this position, an offer to finance the dental care they need might be a most thoughtful and welcome gift in honor of Older Americans Month.

Do you know an older American who needs help restoring their smile? Get in touch with us at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center. We’ll be happy to help with Free Dental Implant Consultation, and you’ll find no better care when it comes to dental implants. Indianapolis is just full of people with bright, beautiful smiles that Dr. Falender and his team have had a hand in creating.

All-on-4 Dental Implants: A Modern-day and Good-looking Alternative to Conventional Dentures

All-on-4-Dental-Implants-A-Modern-day-and-Good-looking-Alternative-to-Conventional-Dentures

Despite Marion County residents’ best efforts, there are times where a majority of teeth in one part of the jaw have a hopeless prognosis and must be removed. When the upper or lower teeth are completely missing, a combination of dentures and dental implants can provide you with the stability and comfort that are essential for maintaining your health and your appearance. While conventional dentures alone may offer the appearance of a full smile, by adding a system of four dental implants we can significantly increase the permanence and strength of your smile.

This system, known as All-on-4 Implants, utilizes the functional and esthetic benefits of dental implants to permanently secure a complete denture in the upper or the lower jaw. The surgical component is typically being completed in one day, and the patient can leave the office with a full complement of temporary teeth. In as few as three months later the process of converting the temporaries to a permanent prosthesis is completed. This system is quite significant because it quickly resolves a number of the problems associated with missing teeth.

What Are the Consequences of Tooth Loss?

  • Decreased volume and distorted shape in the jaw bone
  • Discomfort or inability to tolerate conventional dentures
  • Compromised or sunken appearance (cheeks, lips, jaws)

There Are Immediate and Long-Term Benefits for The All-On-4 Implants Procedure:

  • Implants will replace the missing tooth roots.
  • Implants can bring stability to the shape and density of the jawbone.
  • Dentures will be firm and secure during speaking and eating.
  • Implants will provide adequate positioning and support for both the dentures and the jaw.
  • Implants will not shift or become loose as they age, thus eliminating the use of denture pastes or adhesives.

All-On-4 Dental Implants—More than Just Replacement Teeth

Above the gums, these custom dentures will give you the confidence of an attractive and full smile, but the adjoining dental implants serve a critical physiologic function. The implant posts will actively stimulate the jaw bone as you chew, greatly reducing the rate of bone loss and shrinkage that would normally occur with tooth loss.

With All-on-Four Dental Implants, you’ll walk away with more than just a basic set of replacement teeth; you’ll be walking away with a strong and secure smile that will work hard for you every day! Take the first step today by calling us at (317) 900-2555 or Schedule Your Personal Consultation with Indianapolis’ Best Oral Surgeon Dr. Falender.
