Is All-On-Four Dental Implants Right For Me As Full Mouth Restoration Option

Is All-On-Four Dental Implants Right For Me As Full Mouth Restoration Option

An Implant procedure that’s being heavily advertised on TV, radio, print and on the web is All On 4 Dental Implants. Supported as a fast and economical way to escape the discomfort and embarrassment of wearing dentures, All On 4 refers to a very specific dental implant treatment plan that can replace all or most of a patient’s missing teeth in the upper or lower dental arch.

The appeal of All On 4 is that is involves only 4 strategically placed implants, as opposed to 5 or even 6. In essence, the patient gets a nearly full complement of teeth, but needs only four implants. All the missing teeth are replaced by restorations that are supported by only 4 implants.

It’s Pretty Obvious Why All On 4 Dental Implants Could Be Popular. The Treatment Plan:

> Involves Less Surgery:

Only four implants need to be placed and bone grafting procedures such as sinus lifts are often not needed.

> Is More Economical:

Only four implants are placed, thus reducing the cost of the surgery as well as that of the final restoration.

> Takes Less Time:

Because advanced surgical procedures are often avoided and the time and number of visits required to fabricate the final restoration is reduced, the entire procedure requires fewer hours in the chair.

When a patient fulfills most of the clinical requisites for a successful outcome and with careful planning on the part of the dentist All On Four Implants can be a very viable and economical choice for patients who are either wearing (or facing the prospect) of full dentures.

In fact, success with this technique can be a real game-changer in the quality of life of the person who pursues such care. To be able to smile, to eat, and to live in comfort without being concerned that one’s teeth may fall out, is something that was unheard of for denture wearers just a few years ago.

All On 4 Dental Implants Are Not for Everyone

Before embarking on the All On 4 treatment course many considerations must be taken into account. Failure to do so will most assuredly, in my personal and professional opinion, lead to dramatic disappointment for both the patient and his or her dentist.

While it is the dentist’s responsibility to determine whether All On 4 is a viable treatment option, it is the patient’s prerogative to ask a lot of questions about the pros and cons of such treatment. And the most important question of all is this:

What Happens if One of the Implants Fails?

With thorough and thoughtful diagnosis, carefully planned and proper surgical techniques, well fabricated restorations, and the appropriate follow-up care, the majority of implants are highly successful. In fact, some literature indicates a greater than 99% success rate.

But The Reality Is This:

Some of the implants will fail. Aside from surgical failure, the most common reason for an implant to fail is overload. In other words, after an implant is restored with a crown or as part of a bridge, it is then put into what we call function. This implant works hard: it bites, chews, and it grinds.

When an implant is part of a bridge, one of its jobs is to help support and carry the load that normally would have been carried by natural teeth. When the load becomes excessive, it’s common for the patient to lose some of his or her supporting bone. That is what leads to implant failure.

Management of these forces is one of the most crucial aspects of long-term implant success.

Here Are Two of the Many Considerations That Must Be Taken into Account When Deciding If All On Four Is a Good Choice for You:

  • The more missing teeth that are replaced, the greater stress and strain is placed on the implants and the supporting bone around them.
  • If the opposite dentition is overly strong, the implants will be subjected to incredible forces. Imagine a large man with powerful jaw muscles and the force his implants will endure. The greater the force, the more support (number of implants) will be needed to help share or distribute the load.

Getting Back to All On 4 Dental Implants by Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center

Remember, there are just four implants to support the functional load of an entire dental arch. If the force factors are relatively low and there is an abundance of bone to support properly sized and angled implants, the All On 4 Procedure can offer years of service to a very satisfied patient. But should just one implant fail, there will be trouble. First, the entire restoration must be removed. Next, additional implants must be placed. Finally, a new restoration must be made. This is costly in time and money.

Thanks to both dental ingenuity and a lot of publicity, All On 4 has become a very popular and sought-after treatment option. It can be a valuable service to the edentulous (a nice way to say “toothless”) person seeking better function, esthetics and comfort, less time in the dental chair, and a lower overall investment.

Stay tuned (and subscribe) for more of my thoughts on the All On Four dental implants procedure and another dental procedure like: Teeth In A Day.

Implant Supported Dentures Procedure in Indianapolis

Implant Supported Dentures Procedure in Indianapolis

An Implant Supported Denture is a contemporary restoration that has revolutionized the way surgeons and dentists think of replacing a full set of teeth. Standard dentures are unsecured prostheses with inherent limitations. Most often, dentures are painful, inconvenient and unstable. Such dentures can make chewing foods difficult, limiting the foods that you once enjoyed.

Procedures that are offered by Indianapolis Implant dentist, Dr. Lawrence Falender:

>> State-Of-The-Art Diagnostic Imaging

With this surgical procedure, treatment is planned well in advance, using state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging equipment that includes a Cone Beam CT Scanner. This is a special type of scanner that produces highly detailed 3-D images of your jaws, including all your facial structures such as muscles, nerves, blood vessels as well as any existing teeth and your jawbone.

>> Plan The Implant Placement

The 3-D images produced during a CT scan enable our skilled Indianapolis Implant Specialist, Dr. Falender to accurately plan the implant placement for your new teeth. He will decide exactly where to place each implant to give you the very best results using computer simulation to digitally position the implants in the jawbone. The implants must be positioned in such a way that they will help to stabilize each other, much like the legs of a chair; once the seat of the chair is in place it will lock all the legs together, creating a stable foundation.

>> Create A Surgical Guide

The information provided by the computer simulation is also used to create a surgical guide which is a special type of template and which is used during dentures in a day surgery to eliminate error when placing the dental implants. This type of detailed planning is essential as it is vital to miss all the important structures in your jaws while still ensuring your new, same day dental implants in Indianapolis are in exactly the right position to support new teeth that will not only look great, but which will be fully functional.

>> Attaching Your New Implant Supported Denture

Once the implants are in place, they can be restored with temporary implant crowns or a bridge. Even though you will have a set of temporary teeth, it’s still important to allow time for the same day dental implants to heal and to bond with your jawbone.

In our office on Indinapolis, IN we do not create shortcuts for Osseointegration process, and where new bone cells will grow on and around the implant post so it becomes firmly fused to your jawbone. During this healing process the new teeth dental implants must not move, so your temporary teeth will be fabricated to ensure the implants are all either locked in position in the case of implant bridges. In the case of single crowns, they will be fabricated in such a way so they do not come into contact with your opposing teeth whenever you try to bite or chew.

Once the implants are fully healed and integrated with your jawbone, you can return to our Indianapolis dental office to have your permanent new teeth made.

What Are The Alternative Treatments For Implant Supported Dentures?

Alternative treatments to Implant Supported Dentures in a day include conventional or traditional dental implants, where treatment is lengthier, or mini dental implants. Both these treatments have their own advantages and disadvantages that will be discussed during your initial appointment with dental implants specialist in Indianapolis Dr. Falender.

Teeth in a Day: Innovation in Teeth Replacement

Teeth in a Day: Innovation in Teeth Replacement

Living a life without teeth is no picnic. People who have no remaining natural teeth generally experience a more reduced quality of life than their counterparts. Experts believe this results from a restrictive diet of softer foods that do not provide enough nutrients and lower self-esteem and confidence. While edentulous people have several options for replacing their missing teeth, dental implants represent the very cutting edge of technology and patient satisfaction. Of course, many patients find the time involved in placing dental implants a bit daunting. For those who want to experience the enhanced quality of life associated with dental implants in record time, Dr. Falender, your Indianapolis dentist and oral surgeon, presents Teeth in a Day.

Traditional Dental Implants

As opposed to teeth replacement options that rest on top of the gums, such as bridgework or dentures, dental implants simulate a natural tooth’s crown and root structure. Biocompatible titanium posts are surgically inserted into the jawbone and, over the course of the next 3-6 months, integrate with the surrounding bone tissue. Next, the posts are exposed and an abutment is placed. Several weeks to a couple of months later, your dentist places the dental prosthetic, usually a crown, partial dentures, or full dentures, onto the implant. In general, patients undergoing dental implant placement can expect the total procedure to take anywhere from 5-10 months.

What are Teeth in a Day?

Teeth in a Day refers to a procedure that requires the coordination of several essential elements, including a skilled oral surgeon, an experienced prosthodontist, state-of-the-art imaging technology and planning software, and the very best materials. After using 3D imaging to carefully plan the implant placement, the oral surgeon places four titanium posts and the prosthodontist affixes a durable, highly realistic prosthetic. Teeth in a Day technology can replace a single missing tooth or a full dental arch. Teeth in a Day is also appropriate for patients with severely compromised teeth whose oral health would benefit from total extraction. These patients can undergo extraction and replacement in a single day!

Benefits of Teeth in a Day

In addition to an overall enhanced quality of life that comes with replacing missing or severely compromised dentition, Teeth in a Day offer several advantages over other teeth replacement options, including:

  • Minimized healing time.
  • Restores an average 90% of your chewing ability (as opposed to 10-20% restored chewing ability with removable dentures).
  • Easy to maintain. Consistent brushing and flossing and regular checkups with your family dentist will keep your new smile healthy and beautiful for many years.
  • You do not have to face the embarrassment of slipping or loose removable dentures.
  • You look instantly younger and in better health as your new teeth restore the underlying support to your cheeks and lips.

All-on-4 Dental Implants Aftercare: How to Achieve a Smooth Recovery

All-on-4 Dental Implants Aftercare- How to Achieve a Smooth Recovery Indianapolis

All-on-4® dental implants provide patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth the opportunity to quickly and affordably restore their smiles. This innovative implant system can support a full arch denture with four strategically placed implants. Knowing ahead of time what the procedure involves both during and afterwards will eliminate any surprises and provide peace of mind.

After your implants are placed, it’s important to follow your post-surgical instructions carefully in order to minimize complications. Patients who follow the dentist’s instructions are more likely to achieve a smooth recovery and long-lasting results.

At Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center in Indianapolis, INDr. Lawrence Falender will meet with you during a private consultation to explain the procedure in dental, answer any questions you have, and discuss what the All-on-4 dental implants aftercare process entails.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

Following proper oral hygiene and keeping your mouth clean is the first and most important step to minimizing your risk of infection. The day after surgery, you will be encouraged to brush your teeth after each meal. Be sure to use gentle techniques so as not to dislodge the surgical site and implant placement. If your restorative device is placed the same day as your implants, use a dental waterpik to prevent food from getting trapped under the denture and around the implants. Dr. Falender may also advise you on a special mouthwash to help aid in your recovery and oral health maintenance.

Minimize Discomfort and Swelling

As with any surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some soreness and swelling for the first few days after surgery. To minimize discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medications. We also recommend placing an ice pack on your outer jaw in 20-minute intervals.

If light bleeding occurs, this is completely normal. Placing gauze over the area and biting down for 30 minutes will slow bleeding and allow a blood clot to form. If bleeding persists past the first few days and is followed by increased pain and fever, it’s important to Contact your Indianapolis Oral Surgeon Dr. Falender, as this may be the beginning signs of infection.

Rest and Hydrate

Resting and keeping your head elevated for the first two to three days will significantly improve your chances for a smooth recovery. We also encourage patients to drink plenty of fluids. Participating in strenuous activity too soon can cause complications, such as infection and dental implant failure. Be sure to follow your post-surgical instructions diligently on activities to avoid. Most patients can return to normal activity three days after surgery.

Follow a Softs Food Diet

In addition to staying hydrated, there are certain foods to avoid and consume that will assist you in your recovery. For the first four to six weeks, you will be encouraged to avoid hot, spicy, and difficult-to-eat foods so as to prevent irritation and dental implant dislodgment, as well as to follow a soft foods diet. Your diet can include:

  • Smoothies
  • Protein shakes
  • Warm soups
  • Baked or mashed potatoes
  • Soft breads
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Cooked cereals
  • Finely chopped meats
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Cottage cheese or macaroni and cheese

Top 10 Reasons Why Dental Implants Are The Perfect Solution to Tooth Loss

Top 10 Reasons Why Dental Implants Are The Perfect Solution to Tooth Loss

If you are someone that has considered dental implants, but are still unsure about the benefits of the treatment, here are ten good reasons why implants are the best available solution to tooth loss…

#1. They Have A Natural Appearance

Dental implants are simply the closest replacement to natural teeth. The crown (or prosthetic tooth) sits in exactly the same position to the gum line as a tooth, and therefore most people are unable to tell the difference between natural teeth and an implant. At Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, Indianapolis, IN we strive to achieve the best possible results in terms of the colour of our implant crowns, to guarantee that the restoration looks 100% natural.

#2. They Behave Like A Normal Tooth

Dental implants function like a natural tooth does allowing you to eat the foods you choose. An implant consists of a small titanium screw which is inserted into a tiny hole in the jaw bone. Because the material is titanium, it naturally fuses with the bone, creating a superbly strong artificial root.

#3. No Damage Is Done to Other Teeth

Dental implants replace a single tooth with a single implant, without any unnecessary damage to other teeth. However, conventional bridges on the other hand, reduce the two healthy teeth adjacent to a gap to support the structure. Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant has no effect on adjacent teeth and can be easily cleaned and flossed, just as a natural tooth can be.

#4. They Can be Cost Effective

The ADA recently stated that ‘over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost-effective and satisfactory option.’ The life expectancy of a bridge is around 10 years, but when you consider that an implant is a permanent solution that will not decay or cause any complications to surrounding teeth, it is clearly more cost effective in the long run.

#5. They Can Last a Lifetime

The longevity of a dental implant is generally very high with an average success rate of 95% after 10 years. In our experience, dental implants provide a highly predictable solution to replace missing teeth. Like natural teeth, if you follow appropriate homecare advice, attend regular dental appointments and maintain a healthy lifestyle, dental implants should last you a lifetime. Unlike other dental procedures, implants are a one-time investment that can be a long-term solution.

#6 You Can Eat Whatever You Like!

Having dentures, or loose, failing or missing teeth, can mean that people are forced to avoid any foods which are crunchy or chewy, which can be very frustrating. Many of our patients talk about how frustrating it is to avoid such foods and miss out on the joys of chewing a juicy steak, or crunching on a crispy apple. However, the strength and stability of implants means all these foods needn’t be avoided.

#7You Can Be Confident About Your Smile

48% of the population in the USA are unhappy with their smile and consequently they miss out on all of the natural benefits smiling brings. Smiling can reduce stress, make you more attractive, calm you down, lift a bad mood- you can even make another person happy with a smile! Restoring your smile or replacing missing teeth, with the most natural solution available, will allow you to confidently smile again.

#8. People Won’t Know You Have Implants

Many of our patients say, that when they meet people for the first time, they are entirely unaware that they have implants. Many others choose not to reveal the fact that they have implants. This invisibility and reliability of implants means that people no longer feel self-conscious about their smile. Unlike dentures, implants do not need to be routinely removed as implants are easily maintained and cleaned like natural teeth, allowing you to get on with your life without any embarrassment or discomfort.

#9. They Will Prevent Aging

The reduction in jaw bone tissue that bridges or dentures cause, can often result in the aging of a patient’s face. Implants however, prevent this bone loss, thus helping to retain the natural shape of the jaw.

#10. They Will Restore Your Self-esteem And Enhance Your Lifestyle

Because implants are invisible, discreet, reliable, stable and aesthetically natural- it goes without saying that they will inevitably enhance your self-confidence, increase self-esteem and improve appearance, resulting in a more enjoyable lifestyle.

Never Have Loose Dentures Again: Permanent Dentures in a Day

Never Have Loose Dentures Again- Permanent Dentures in a Day

“My Dentures Are Loose” is a common complaint that dentists and oral surgeons hear all the dentures in a day time. This is usually from a patient that is wearing an older denture or is on their second or third denture. Understand that when you lose your teeth, the supporting bone ceases to have a function. This is especially true when all the teeth in an arch (upper or lower jaw) are removed.

Most denture wearers relate that their first set of dentures fit perfect and now their second, third… is very loose. The dentist has tried everything, the patient uses denture adhesives (Poligrip, Fixodent…) a few times a day and sore spots are very common. Social gatherings are avoided due to fear of the dentures popping out. Also, taste is decreased as is the enjoyment of eating favorite foods. In addition, dentures use causes the continued deterioration of your jawbones.

So What Can We Do for These Patients?

Permanent Dentures In A Day

We can restore the look, strength and function of natural teeth in one day with Permanent Denture! Unlike dentures, the All-on-4® is fixed in place in your mouth using four Nobel Biocare dental implants. With the All-on-4®, your set of beautiful new teeth is attached to the dental implants. The teeth can only be removed by your dentist.

Once the implants are in place, Dr. Falender attaches anchors to which the new replacement teeth can be secured. Your dentist will make the final replacement teeth on the abutments and adjusts the bite for comfort and a beautiful smile.

To put it quite simply, there is no comparison between the All-on-4® technique and removable dentures. With this incredible technique, the following benefits and advantages are afforded to almost all patients of all ages and stages of tooth loss:

Results of the All-on-4® procedure are immediate and can be enjoyed on the same day. This means instant oral aesthetics (a beautiful and natural smile) and a fully restored bite functionality, which almost always can be used for eating on the evening of the procedure.

The results are fixed and non-removable: The dental prosthetic bridge used in the All-on-4® is affixed to four dental implants in the mouth. So, unlike false teeth, it does not move around and cannot fall out. It also prevents continued bone loss.

The fixed denture is cleaned just like natural teeth – with regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing- so no need for removal after meals or at night time.
No repeated expenses such as messy adhesives, anesthetic gels and other costs associated with wearing removable dentures.

The dental prosthesis is custom fabricated to intimately fit the natural contours of the patient’s mouth and jaw, so it feels like a full set of natural teeth.
There is no compromise of taste, and there is no triggering the gag reflex as removable dentures tend to.
Increased bite strength so patients can enjoy all the foods they love but previously couldn’t with removable dentures and missing teeth.
The All-on-4® teeth replacement solution is long term and can last decades to a lifetime if cared for properly!

All-On-4® Dental Implants

Who should consider All-on-4® Dental Implants? Who is a good candidate?

  • People with several failing or missing teeth.
People who are in need of multiple dental implants.
    People who wear dentures.

Call today for a confidential consultation and get started on the road to a better life!

What Is the All-on-4 Implants Process and Am I A Candidate for All On 4 Dental Implants?

What Is the All-on-4 Implants Process and Am I A Candidate for All On 4 Dental Implants?

If you have suffered total tooth loss, have been told it is imminent, or currently wear ill-fitting removable dentures, the All-on-4 dental implant process is an option that you should look into. In Indianapolis, All-on-4 Implants Procedures offer a faster solution to tooth loss than traditional implant procedures, restoring the look, feel and function of natural teeth in one day. That means that you could walk into our dental office toothless one morning and leave with a full, brilliant new smile that same afternoon. By now you are probably wondering just what the All-on-4 process is and whether you are a candidate for this procedure.

The All-On-4 Dental Implant Process at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center

The All-on-4 Implants technique is a revolutionary approach to implant-based dental restoration in patients who have lost all teeth in one jaw or both. Before this technique was developed, providing a patient with a full arch of replacement teeth meant placing at least six dental implants – and often as many as eight or ten – in the jaw, then waiting months for the implants to bond with the jawbone before replacement teeth could be attached. Additionally, patients often had to undergo preparatory procedures, such as bone grafts or sinus lifts, before implants could be placed, making the process – and the amount of time spent wearing an uncomfortable temporary denture – even longer.

With the All-on-4 dental implants in Indianapolis process, patients have one or two visits with Dr. Falender for the purpose of treatment planning. During those visits, Dr. Falender will gather the information needed for precise surgical planning and prosthetic fabrication. That information gathering process generally includes a physical examination, 3D CT scans, X-rays, photos and impressions, as well as the collection of a complete dental and health history. After these consultation appointments have been completed, patients are scheduled for surgery, during which four specialized immediate-load dental implants will be placed in the jaw and new teeth fitted and adjusted – all in one appointment.

Are You a Candidate for The All-On-4 Ventura Dental Implants Procedure?

Most people who are in fairly good general and oral health are candidates for this procedure. That doesn’t mean you have to be in perfect health, so don’t assume you aren’t a candidate if you have a few health problems. Most patients with underlying medical or dental health issues can have the procedure, with just a few exceptions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension, certain blood disorders or active periodontal disease, among others. Additionally, due to the specialized design of the dental implants used in All-on-Four procedure, patients with some bone loss in the jaw – even those who have been wearing removable dentures for years – can often be helped to a new, secure and natural-looking smile, often without the need for preparatory bone augmentation procedures.

Of course, the only way to know for sure if you’re a candidate for dental restoration through the All-on-4 process is to see your Implant Dentist for a consultation. If you are one of the few patients who cannot be helped with this advanced form of dental implant restoration, chances are that your dentist has other implant-based options available to restore optimal oral health and function and an attractive new smile.

Look Years Younger With Dental Implants Indianapolis

Look Years Younger With Dental Implants Indianapolis

You typically spend the first couple decades of your life wishing you were older, then sometime, years later into adulthood, you start wishing you looked years younger.

Here at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center many patients who have experienced dental implants in Indianapolis have told us that implants have not only improved the way that they carry out everyday tasks such as talking and eating, but it’s also made a huge difference to the way that they look too.

If you’re worried it’s your face that is making you look older, Dr. Lawrence Falender may have just the solution for you. No, we’re not talking about drastic plastic surgery. We’re referring to the age-defying services offered at Indianapolis All On 4 Implant.

At Our Indianapolis, IN dental office, we offer dental implant services to patients who have issues with their teeth, including

  • Loose Teeth,
  • Missing Teeth,
  • Failing Teeth, or
  • Infected teeth.

But what does that have to do with looking younger? Quite a lot, actually!

Prevent Bone Loss With Dental Implants

When a tooth falls out naturally or happens to be removed the jawbone will automatically start to shrink making the face look as if it has been ‘pinched’. Over time this can lead to the development of sagging cheeks and wrinkles. For some this can be a drastic alteration which can leave them feeling less than confident.

Over time, the lack of bone structure will cause your face to collapse, resulting in sagging skin and extra, premature wrinkles. While dentures can certainly help prevent these negative consequences of tooth loss, dental implants are likely your best option.

Dental implants prevent your bone from deteriorating and your remaining teeth from shifting. This is great news if you’re wanting to maintain your smile after losing teeth, no matter your age. Although maintaining a youthful glow is certainly a great perk! Whilst traditional methods to missing teeth such as dentures don’t address this issue, the good news is that well-fitting dental implants can make a real difference to a person’s appearance and can actually appear to make them seem younger. Let’s see how.

What Is A Dental Implant?

With all this talk about dental implants, you’re probably left wondering exactly what these powerful little tools are. They’re tiny rods, similar to screws that we surgically place in your jawbone.

Implants can then be capped with a dental crown to replace a single lost tooth. If you’re missing more or even all of your teeth, we can strategically place dental implants to hold a dental bridge or partial or full dentures in place. With so many different ways to use dental implants, you’d be hard-pressed not to find a solution that can work for you.

Giving the Appearance of a Fuller Mouth

Unlike other forms of teeth replacement dental implants fit snugly into the gap left by your missing teeth. This gives the immediate look of a fuller mouth and can appear to banish the ‘gaunt’ appearance of sagging cheeks.

Stops Unwanted Bone Wastage

The other major factor that’s particular to dental implants is that they can actually halt the bone shrinkage process. When a tooth is lost the bone tissue that once supported the tooth root is no longer stimulated. As a result it starts to shrink away gradually. This bone shrinkage will over time alter the overall shape of the face. Unlike dentures which sit on the gum line a dental implant is secured down in to the jawbone. Over time the bone tissue cleverly fuses and merges with the titanium implant to create a strong and solid platform upon which to support the crown. Therefore not only can dental implants halt the bone shrinking process, but they can also encourage bone re-growth.

Look Great Aesthetically

Finally if you need more proof, dental implants are by far the most natural alternative to missing teeth. In fact if you come to us at Indianapolis Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center and are fitted for a dental implant in Indianapolis then we are sure that unless they look very closely, your friends and family won’t be able to tell the difference between an implant and a real tooth. We use a color match process to ensure that your teeth are well -matched for that seem less blend of artificial and natural. Taking Care of Your Dental Implants, The Right Way in Indianapolis

Taking Care of Your Dental Implants, The Right Way in Indianapolis

Dental implants are the number one solution for restoring missing teeth for many reasons. They have a high success rate, they improve the abilities of chewing and eating, and they look and feel just like natural teeth. Plus they are affordable! However, even though they are esthetically indistinguishable from natural teeth, dental implants do require special care.  The goal is simple, you want your dental implants to last a lifetime! In this article, we want to cover some basic dental implant health tips that will help you find success with dental implants.

There’s lots of pain that comes with dental implant failure. It feels embarrassing, moreover than when you first had your missing tooth. No one wants to feel that way, so let’s make sure of that. So instead of risking further tooth loss and dental implant failure, we want to show you just how simple it is to take care of your teeth. Surprisingly, these 7 simple tips are so easy to work into your everyday routine, and will help make sure your dental implants stay healthy and well. Let’s take a look at them.

Why You Should Be Taking Care of Your Dental Implants

Dental implants themselves cannot develop cavities or decay, but that doesn’t guarantee lifetime success alone. Here is why.

Inflammation and implantitis, a periodontal infection, can affect the soft and hard gum tissues that are supporting the dental implant. If left untreated, your dental implants become victims to the same bacteria that gnaws away at natural teeth. In turn, these bacteria develop into a hard deposit called calculus. Calculus destroys the gum and bone support surrounding the dental implant that keep it securely in place. The one hurting effect of calculus, once it’s there no amount of brushing or flossing can get rid of it, the only way being at the hands of a dental hygienist. The constant envoy of bacteria attacking dental implants may not leave a mark on the implant itself, but will eat away at what keeps the implant in place and risks implant failure.

7 Tips to Take Care of Your Dental Implants

In a study conducted by the American College of Prosthodontist, they have identified and laid out the must-do’s every person should be aware of to keep their teeth healthy.

Here we have the top 7 ways you can achieve dental health success.

#1 Get a Dental Examination Once Every 6 Months

It’s important to communicate with your dentist on average every 6 months. Cleanings are one of the most important things you can do for your teeth, as we cannot clean the back of our teeth as thoroughly as we think we do with just a toothbrush and floss. Dentist are there to educate you and give you goals to improve or keep up your oral health.

#2 Floss Your Teeth Daily

A question you may always dread is when your dentist asks, “Have you been flossing”? The answer is probably no, and that can be a huge detriment for you and your dental health. When it comes to flossing dental implants, use a water pik. Water piks are easier on the gums and don’t come with the same soreness as traditional floss. If you’re experiencing bleeding while flossing, you’re pushing the floss too deep into your gums. It’s a tall order to floss every day for many, but flossing is one of the best things you can do for your teeth and dental implant health.

#3 Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

This should not come as a shocker to any of you. Brushing your teeth is what keeps bacteria from multiplying exponentially while you’re sleeping or out and about during the day. Every day, before and after you get out of bed, you need to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes. Brush each tooth gently in a circular motion 15 times before rinsing out your mouth. Don’t overextend and brush your teeth longer than this. Excessive brushing can wear down the thin layer of enamel protecting your teeth and do more harm than good.

#4 Replace that Icky Toothbrush of Yours

Your toothbrush goes a long way for you. It cleans your teeth when you need it, brushing away the thousands of bacteria specimens breeding in your mouth on a daily basis. It’s there for you when you need it day in and day out, even when you’re sick. But relationships with your toothbrush don’t last forever. We recommend replace your toothbrush every 6 weeks, which goes for electric toothbrushes as well (the head of it). If you are sick, replace your toothbrush immediately, as you don’t want to get sick again due to the icky bacteria lingering on the bristles.

#5 Wear a Mouth Guard to Protect Your Dental Implants

There’s a high chance of your dental implants experiencing damage if you grind your teeth in your sleep. If believe that you do, talk with your dentist, as they will set you up with a night mouth guard to protect your teeth as you sleep. Nighttime is not the only time you may want to wear a mouth guard. Mouth guards are extremely important if you play sports or participate in any physical exercise. They make sure your teeth aren’t harmed if you get knocked into or you fall down while being active. Furthermore, make sure the mouth guard you receive fits your teeth perfectly, else it will feel awkward and uncomfortable.

#6 Avoid Smoking and Chewing Tobacco

Tobacco use is amongst the most harmful things you put in your body. In recent years, there has been innumerable studies about the danger of tobacco, especially on your teeth. It causes tooth decay, it eats at your gums, it causes bad breath, and eventually you’ll have nothing but black plaque left in your mouth. If you are a smoker, it’s almost certain your dentist will make you quit before you even qualify to get a dental implant. It’s a good time to quit now as well, taxes on tobacco products have never been higher in the U.S. and will most likely continue to go up.

#7 Eat a Low Sugar Diet

Your tongue knows all about the best pastries out there, but it doesn’t know how much harm such sugary foods can do to your teeth. Sugary foods gnaw down your enamel protecting your teeth, and can cause tooth discoloration and more. Now your dental implant is colored to match the remainder of your teeth, discoloration can make your dental implant stand out like a sore thumb. If you want to keep up an appearance and a nice smile, make sure that the foods you eat aren’t being fueled by sugar. There are many natural foods that are just as good, if not better than sugary processed foods.

Save Time While Saving Your Smile Too : Same Day Teeth

Save Time While Saving Your Smile Too - Same Day Teeth indianapolis

When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, there is no procedure as impactful as the Same Day Teeth procedure. The results are beautiful and life changing, to say the least. Any missing teeth or other imperfections you have in the beginning of the day will not be there by the end. You get a functioning, ideal smile in just one day.

What Is Same Day Teeth?

‘Same Day Teeth’ is a technique for people with missing or failing teeth and usually refers to a new fixed complete set of teeth on dental implants. This is a great option for people who are already wearing dentures or are losing their teeth due to disease and breakdown. The idea being to provide the patient with a new ‘fixed’ set of teeth (either bridgework or a fixed denture) are screwed onto dental implants which have been placed on the very same day. Initially these are a provisional set of teeth that look and feel great and are then replaced with a more permanent set some months later.

The ‘same day’ concept can also be used for a single tooth or a few teeth in some cases, but more commonly relates to a complete jaw or set. It can be done using the ‘All on 4 implants’ technique or with 6-8 or more implants in each jaw depending on the needs of the case and on whether a fixed denture or fixed dental crowns and bridges are desired. All on 4 implants are a quick, safe and cost-effective dental treatment for anyone whose self-confidence and quality of life are affected by missing teeth. All on 4 implants even work in people who have a lack of bone although some bone rebuilding is sometimes necessary.

Criteria For Getting New Teeth In A Day

Patients treated with the technique and therefore included in the retrospective analysis met the following criteria:

  • Jaw Bone profile for the placement of atleast 4 implants of 10mm in length in either healed or immediate extraction sites.
  • Good general health with acceptable oral hygiene.
  • Implants achieved stability at insertion.

So What’s Involved?

Initial Consultation

Your first step in the procedure will be a consultation with your Indianapolis Oral Surgeon Dr. Falender. During this consultation they will examine your mouth and do a CT scan. This scan lets them assess your suitability for implants. They can check your existing jaw bone density to determine precisely where the implants should be inserted. Your oral surgeon should also discuss alternative treatment options with you before you commit to anything.

If you are a suitable candidate and decide to go ahead, the next step will be dental impressions. These are sent to a lab where your new dental bridge is designed to fit and look just like natural teeth. Your Oral Surgeon may also take some x-rays to help with planning your treatment.

Surgery

If you need to have teeth extracted before your implants are inserted, this can usually be done on the same day.

The overdenture is permanently fixed to the implants. Your dentist or oral surgeon will probably offer you a sedative to help you relax during the procedure. Then they will anaesthetise you so you don’t feel any pain. If you would prefer to have a general anaesthetic for your All-on-4 treatment, ask your dentist about this at your initial consultation.

After any remaining teeth are extracted your mouth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any damaged tissue and bacteria.  The dentist drills two or more holes at the front of your jaw to hold the front implants. Two holes at the rear – one on each side – are angled to offer greater support to the rear of the dental bridge.

Once the implants are placed, your mouth is cleaned again and any incisions are stitched up. It’s common for dentists to use dissolvable stitches which disappear after a week or two. Either the same day or the following day you’ll be fitted with your new teeth. Some dentists create a temporary overdenture at this stage which is then replaced a few months later. This is often made from resin – a lighter but less durable material – which puts less pressure on your implants while they heal.

Aftercare

Patients usually experience some bruising, swelling and general discomfort in the days after their surgery. You’ll probably want to take a couple of days off work to recover fully and get used to your new teeth. It will be a while before you can eat apples again.

Your Oral Surgeon will advise you on the type of foods you can and cannot eat in the months after your treatment. For the first few months you’ll probably have to stick to very soft foods so you don’t disturb the process of the implants fusing with your bone. You might also be advised to avoid things like smoking and heavy exercise for a while.

These implants are cleaned just like your normal teeth – by brushing once a day. Your oral surgeon will also show you how to floss with special tools. You might want to invest in a water flosser with special attachments designed to clean around implants.

Benefits of Getting All-on-4 Implants Indianapolis

  • Get Immediate Results : With as few as four dental implants, you can replace your dentures and have a permanent implant-supported bridge in as little as one day. Experience a dramatic improvement in chewing ability, teeth stability and overall comfort right away.
  • Improve Your Appearance : The All-on-4 procedure takes 20 years off of your smile! The procedure helps preserve the jawbone and prevent further deterioration of the facial structure associated with missing teeth and a lack of the root system that supports them. Dental implants decrease wrinkles caused by missing bone and tooth structure, which helps you look younger!
  • Eat What you Want, When You Want, Where You Want : Your overall eating habits will improve with the All-on-4 procedure. You’ll be able to enjoy your favorite foods again, instead of avoiding them in public or at home.
  • Get a Long-Lasting Smile : The All-on-4 dental implant procedure creates a permanent set of teeth with a non-removable implant-supported retained dental bridge. Your dental implants never have to be removed, and your teeth can last a lifetime.
  • Enhance Your Overall Quality of Life : With All-on-4 dental implants, your new teeth will feel and function just like real teeth. You’ll have greater comfort and confidence when smiling, speaking, and eating. Overall you’ll look better, feel better, and have a renewed outlook on life.
  • Eliminate Health Issues Associated with Failing and Missing Teeth : The All-on-4 dental implant procedure helps create a healthier mouth and a healthier body by helping reduce the chance for periodontal disease, a bacterially-induced chronic infection and inflammatory disease. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases. Because dental implants restore your mouth to a more natural state, they may help fend off periodontal disease. With routine brushing and flossing, dental implants help enhance your overall health.
  • Easily Care for Your Teeth : Another All-on-4 implants benefit is ease of care. With daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to your Dental Associates hygienist and dentist, your new teeth will stay clean and healthy.
